When deciding on the type of Access Point (AP) to purchase from us (Cisco Partners) or Cisco always bear in mind that there are THREE types of Access Points, namely:

Indoor Access Point
Indoor Rugged Access Point (typically used in factories with harsh environments like high temperatures or humidity)
Outdoor Access Point

By the term “Unified” is means that the Cisco Unified Wireless Network is based on a centrally controlled model. Central control in a unified network is accomplished minimally by having the access points (AP) using Cisco WLC (Wireless LAN controllers). If your organization is very large then you can add either the Cisco NCS or Cisco WCS (Wireless Control System) to help you control multiple WLC.

PURCHASING ACCESS POINTS

You also need to understand that there are two major approaches to deploying a WLAN:
1.      Standalone (also known as “Fat” or “Thick” or “Autonomous”  implementation model
2.      Lightweight( also known as “Thin” or “Controller-based” solution


If you are implementing a “Lightweight” WLAN model then you must plan to purchase a WLC (wireless LAN controller) with your AP (access point). Hence, when purchasing your access point you will have to specify whether it is Lightweight or Autonomous (aka standalone). Otherwise, if you purchase a standalone or autonomous type then you will have a big problem monitoring it from a central location or entity.

If you specify “Lightweight” it then means that you must buy a Controller (WLC) with your Access Point (AP) and this implies an additional cost due to the controller item.
You must also quote your geographical region when specifying your access point type.

“A” means America; “E” means Europe(most African countries fall within this regulatory band) and “J” means Japan.

By adding a Cisco MSE (Mobility services engine), you can deploy services such as context-aware services also known as “location-based tracking and intrusion prevention.
